Nellie Bly Kaleidoscopes and Art Glass presents a Peek-A-Box kaleidoscope by Mark Tickle. This completely new concept combines a scope with a shadowbox. As you peer into the side of this 9″ long rectangular scope, it seems to be a hollow box with only a beautiful lamp worked glass dragonfly floating in the center. But, by looking in the 2 1/2″ square end of the scope, what unfolds is a large 6-point kaleidoscopic mandala. How can that be?.. are you kidding?… the box is hollow! Or so it appears. The mirror system is actually concealed by an amazing optical illusion. Peek- A- Box is only one of many magical wonders by North Carolina artist Marc Tickle on display, for play, at Nellie Bly- where ingenuity is always plentiful.

The most current event on everyone’s mind is the disaster in The Gulf and local poets are responding. William Ward has written two pieces about the oil spill, which he will read at Art Walk at 7:00 PM. He says. “ I personally have been moved to write about the oil spill. We are seeing the scientific, technological, political, socioeconomic, environmentalist responses on TV everyday. We aren’t seeing the responses of artists and poets. For me, the arts often more accurately depict and more genuinely respond to a catastrophe than do the TV pundits and talking heads. (Think of Picasso’s Guernica, for example.)“
Searching back into her early ancestry, gallery artist Ninfa has created her latest piece “Armenian Exile” which she painted just this year after discovering that her Colombian roots took her back to Armenia as her great-grandparents fled the genocide of 1915 and settled in South America. Her niece modeled for this moving painting. Over a million people were slaughtered or died on the difficult forced march out of the country.
Donna Chesler, gallery owner, presents a final Polaroid transfer on copper, using 13 sheets of film. An original cartoon drawn by Joe Ward will accompany her piece. The pair comments on veganism, a subject close to both artists’ hearts. Ardis Harsche will be creating a tribute to Jerome’s many characters with an interesting study of the everyday people who make up this quirky town.
Dawn Sutherland paints a canvas about the destruction of our pristine lands and Michael Craig Carrier will deliver a new Ecological Assemblage that will challenge the way we see ordinary objects. Michael Gallagher, a special guest for the show, draws a scathing picture of his vision of the destructiveness and divisive nature of politics.
